Access 97 mdb backend not working on Windows Server 2003

Hi,

This is a bit curly to explain but I'll do my best.

I'm working on a site that had an Access 97 mdb backend running on a network
server (NT4) with Access 97 frontends running on client workstations. All
fine.

Then they upgraded the server to Windows Server 2003 and Office to 2003, so
we converted the backend and all the frontends to Access 2003 mdbs. Put the
backend onto the WinServer03, and frontends onto workstations (XP). All fine.

All new orders go into the new 03 backend on WinServer03. BUT they still
want to access data in the old Access97 backend mdb. Thought no problem, put
a copy of it on the new WinServer03 box, and link to it from the workstations
from the new Access03 frontends. Doesn't work, drops lots of functionality at
the frontend.

However, we can get this to work by leaving the Access97 backend on the NT4
box, link to it from a Access03 frontends, and it works. But the network guy
had to setup pasthrough authentication (dont understand it myself) so the
workstations could see the NT4 server for this to work. And ideally they just
want to get rid of the NT4 server etc, and just have the new setup.

Why would the Access97 backend mdb work fine on NT4, but not on
WinServer2003 ?? ...hope I've explained it clearly enough.
