Accessible PDF

Can Word 2008 create an accessible PDF? I can find no options in the program. Save As PDF and Print to PDF do not create a PDF with tags or bookmarks

Am I missing something or is this just not possible with this version of Word?

Thanks.

AFAIK the only PDF generator that can construct bona fide accessible PDFs is
Adobe Acrobat Professional. Any PDF generators which come "built-in" a a
part of other programs or operating systems provide only fundamental
capabilities with little variation.

It certainly looks that way but I'm told that Word 2007 was able to do this. The PDFs will create but I'm surprised that Word cannot send the tags and bookmarks when it creates the PDF.

Thanks.

Hi Stewart:

As far as I know, it's not possible with "ANY" version of Word.

On the Mac, the PDF "generator" is actually Apple OS X, so you need to ask
Apple why that is. But I think I know...

On the PC, the PDF generator Microsoft supplies can't do it either.
Microsoft wanted to include the ability, but Adobe screamed and wanted to
charge more for the licence to do this than the feature is worth.

So if you want tagged PDFs on the PC, you have to buy Adobe Acrobat :)
That will make them, from Word. But it's expensive!

On the PC, Microsoft offers the XPS format (XML Paper Specification). Adobe
is doing everything it can to prevent XPS from taking off in the
marketplace, because it can do all of the same things PDF can, and more.

Being a "Public" specification, anyone can make it without royalty. And it
already supports the "Accessible" tags...

Cheers

Pursuant to what John added... The key point to wrap one's head around is
that it isn't a matter of what Word - or any other program - "sends". The
originating program makes all of its content available for any output format
it may be able to generate. The restriction is imposed by the file format
being generated & the software/filter used to generate that output.

in 2008 the save as Pdf converter is a MS invention. As it cures the
problem with Multiple Pdf's being created when there are page breaks in
word documents and although section breaks, I believe it cures them as
well.

If you Apple's Print to PDF feature its plagued with those same issues
as Acrobat. MS go tired of waiting on Adobe to fix the issue since
Acrobat 1. about 15 20 years. And they haven't offered to try. Claim
they can't make sense of MS page and section Break code.
