Actual work and fixed duration task

Hi all.
I have a fixed duration task with a duration of 4 days and a work of 24
hours, the task is effort-driven.
I assign to the task two resources, let's say for example John and Steve.
The task is scheduled to start on 23th of january and finish on 26th of
january, as i wanted.
Of the total amount of the task work i assign 8 hours to John and 16 hours
to Steve with flat work contour in both cases,
So MS project correctly distributes work during the 4 days fixed duration
task lenght, that is it assigns to john 2 hours of work in each day and to
Steve 4 hours in each day.
I want to track this task updating timephased actual work for the above
resource assignments, in the task usage view.
I use the defaulted timescale in the Task Usage view, that is the one
divided into days.
Case 1) In the right pane of the view,i enter the actual work for the
resource assignment related to John and, in particular, i enter, for the day
23th of january, an amount of 8 hours in the actual work field.
In this way the % of work complete about John assignment is equal to 100 %.
I do not update the actual work fields related to Steve, i leave them blank.
I need to increase John work assignment from the 8 initial hours to 10 hours
and to do that i edit the work assignment field related to John, from 8 hours
to 10 hours(So i do not make this change in the timephased pane).
In this way Ms Project gives me a warning and changes my fixed duration task
to a 5 days duration task.
This is not what i expected, since that i want the task to be a fixed 4 days
duration task.
Case 2) If, instead of leaving blank,in the timephased pane, the actual work
fields related to Steve assignment, i put in the actual work field of 23 th
of January even 0 hours(or any other positive hours) and i, after that, edit
the work assignment field related to John from 8 hours to 10 hours then the
two more hours i assigned to John are now correctly distributed from 24th of
januray to 26th of january, so that my task remains of 4 days duration, as i
wanted.
I want to underline that the above behaviour happens only when there are at
leat two assignment to a fixed duration task.
Another strange thing that i really don't understand is that if , when i'm
in case 1) and before increasing John work assignment field from 8 to 10
hours, i delete, in the right timephased pane of the view, the actual work
values i'v inserted in the 23th of January column of John assignment, and i
change the work contour of John assignment to flat i experimented the next
behaviour:
The work associated to John assignment still remains 8 hours but it's not
distributed in 4 days and, in the work field of timephased pane , it remains
all(8 hours)on the 23th of january.
If than i decrease the amount of John work assignment(not in the timephased
pane) then the % of John units changes and the work remains all on 23th of
january in the timephased pane.
On the contrar if i increase the amount of John work assignment(not in the
timephased pane) then the work is distributed correctly in the 4 days of my
fixed duration task.
I really wish to know the logic behind both the two above cases, so that i
can handle them.
Thank you very much for reading me
Michele
