Add a series of vertical boxes

Hi,
Could someone pleas assist me. Word 2003.
(Why has it become so hard to do what is a simple
task????).
How do I simply add a series of vertical square boxes
which will be used as tick or cross boxes on a page when
it is printed out.
For the life of me why has microsoft made such a simple
task so frustrating???. I have tried the help files and
find them totally unhelpfull for this simple task.
Am I that stupid???

From the Insert menu, select Symbol and then select the Wingding font and
insert symbol 111.
