Adding outline numbered to "Heading 1" and numbered list underneathbecomes Heading 1 as well!

Hi Word Gurus

This one has me stumped and I wonder what I'm doing wrong here.

I have Word 2003 SP3 and open up a clean new document.

* I enter some 10 line sof text, and set the first one to be Heading
1.
* I modify Heading 1 style to have the outline numbered style of
1.1.1.
* I make sure there is text directly below the Heading 1. It is
"normal" style
* I put the cursor somewhere in this text
* I click on the "numbering" button in the formatting toolbar
* Rather then getting a "numbered" style list, the text is now
"Heading 1" style

And now, whenever I hit the numbering button in the tool bar, I get
Heading 1 and not numbered lists. This makes lists impossible to
start.

This is the most generic case. I have followed everything in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html and
still get the same result.

Any help would be appreciated. I am probably doing something very
wrong!

Cheers

John

The numbering button on the toolbar always applies the last format applied
in the Bullets and Numbering dialog. Which is one very good reason for
always using numbered styles instead of using the Numbering button. Try
applying the List Number style to your numbered list instead of using the
button.

OTOH, if you want the text below your heading to be part of an
outline-numbered list (that is, the heading is 1, the following paragraph is
1.1), then you must apply the numbering to its style as well, as part of the
list template; see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

Thanks Suzanne and Stefan

It was a bit of a surprise thinking the numbering button was a
consistent style - I suppose that is a trap I'm trying to stop
happening with the template I'm creating.

Your help has been very welcome and I can now move on

Regards

John
