Adding Password Protected Content

I

iandigs

I have a web site created in FrontPage2003. I need to have several pages on my site password protected.

HOWEVER, I need these password protected pages to be accessible from only one central password field that will, in turn, be capable of accepting multiple passwords, and then send the user to a specific page based on the respective password they enter.

Does anyone know how I can do this? I would appreciate the guidance.

This is not too difficult but it must be scripted.

Assuming you have a database, there will be a table that contains the
user names, user passwords, and a 'target' URL (page) for each user
you wish to authenticate and redirect. You may also want to provide
an administrator access to the secured pages.

If the user is authenticated he or she is redirected to the pages unique
to that user. If not authenticated we usually redirect back to the login page.

The pages in the site that need to be 'protected' also need some code in
them that is used to verify they are being accessed by somebody who
has been authenticated.

Thanks for your post. I'm glad to hear this is possible. How exactly do I set this up? I do have MS Access as part of my XP Office Suite, so it sounds like I have the necessary software to do it. Also, the pages I'm trying to "protect" are not of vital security.

Perhaps if I give a little more detail. I shoot pictures for area schools. Students and parents can go to my site to order them. HOWEVER, as the site is set up now, students scroll down a list of schools to find their school and place their order from the list. The problem is that my competitor can see this list and know which schools are my clients.

So, what I would like to do ideally, is have a storefront that simply is a welcome message and a password (preferably without a user name). The student or parent could then just enter the password (i.e. their school mascot) and they would be directed ONLY to their school's specific picture order page. This way, a competitor woould have to GUESS a password...and even if he were to do so, he'd only gain access to ONE school's order page....not a complete list of my schools.

Now, my problem is that I don't know HTML or scripting of any kind. What I HAVE been able to build so far, hasn't required my need to script. If you know of programs that do this for me, that's be great! :)

I'm afraid it is more involved than providing you with a 'little more detail'
Ian. Writing a complete tutorial is really too much for a newsgroup and
now that you have provided more contexttual details the actual way to
achieve this objective is a bit more complex than first assumed.

There are many many many articles on websites that document authentication.
To get started...

Google: "user authentication"+"asp"

Its *not* a good idea to use a password such as the name of a school's
mascot. That is public knowledge. The whole idea is to make
authentication reliable and a public password is not a password at all,
rather an invitation if you know what I mean :)

I can't take anymore time this evening as I am studying for an certification
exam day after tommorrow. If I get any brilliant ideas I'll certainly return to
comment. Meanwhile perhaps somebody else may have an idea.
