adding pictures to page

Hi,

i've been trying to add pictures to a web page but i find that they cannot
be positioned side by side or anywhere i want - each pic takes a line across
the entire page the full height of the picture. is this normal, and how can
i do this?

also, is there a way to make the background of the pic transparent or do i
need particular software to do this?

thanks to all for any help and suggestions,

rob

You can use tables for positioning, or use absolute positioning. Considering
your level of expertise, I would suggest using tables. If you have FrontPage
2003, you can use Layout Tables. With older versions, create a table with 0
borders, cellpadding, and cellspacing.

Only GIF and PNG formats will work in a browser for transparent backgrounds.
Each of these 2 image formats can define transparency. A GIF can have only
one transparent color, while a PNG can have various levels of transparency
in it.

You can use a table for this or use CSS positioning.
If it is a GIF image, you can use the image toolbar to make the
background transparent.
