AFP Connection Status failed

I'm running a Mac Mini OS 10.4.8

Just recently wanted to look at PowerPoint
but it will not open.

I get a "network connection failed" dialog
then a AFP Connection Status dialog reporting that it cannot find my
PowerBook which is not connected to the network,

How do I disable this so that I can open PP

All suggestions appreciated.

Hi Cliff -

It would help to know what type of *network* is involved - home, office? -
but just a couple of thoughts...

Is PPt actually installed on the Mini? If so, did you happen to "install" it
by dragging from the PB while it *was* connected?

It sounds like PPt is trying to launch from a 'server' (your PB) rather than
directly from the Mini - perhaps by way of a Desktop alias or Dock icon - &
the actual program isn't being found since the source is not really
available on the 'network'.

Thank you for the response Bob,
My network is a home network sort of as I'm not really up on that. We
simply distribute our signal through a small Belkin hub to two to four
computers depending on if we want our laptops plugged in or not. I
never use my PB3400 anymore, since OS X sort of moves you on.
Your speculations sounds plausible though I did not install from the PB
by dragging.
The PB is a 3400 and ran only OS 9.1. I did have a OS 9 PPt version
installed on the PB though
so I've searched around and tried to elminate any vestigages of the
older version.
Current PPt is part of the MS 2004 suite.
Perhaps I should simply reinstall PPt. I wonder if I can do that
without installing the entire suite.

Thank you
Cliff

I'm not sure reinstalling will resolve it - the application isn't the
problem. Something is making it think it has to locate the PB, and *that's*
the something that has to be corrected. It could even be an OS X issue that
needs to be addressed - although why PPt is the only program being affected
I have no idea. Unfortunately I'm no guru on Mac network issues unless they
pre-date OS 8 - and most of that has been forgotten :)

How are you trying to launch PPt? Try going to the Applications:Miscrosoft
Office 2004 and launch it directly using the actual application icon.

Also, have you applied the Office 11.3 update? If not it would be a good
idea, then Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility (or another utility
app if you prefer). Post back with your results.

Thank you Bob for the suggestions.

I tried launching PPt direct from app.
Reinstalled
Upgraded to 11.3
Repaired Permissions

Still no go. Continue getting AFP connection failure :(

When I get time, I'm going to connect the PB that it is trying to find
and see what happens.
