aligning a table

Hi,

Apologies but I am a newbie.

I have a table. In one of the cells I have inserted another table (I
can hear the groans already!). The problem is that this second table
needs to be aligned to the top of the cell in which it sits.

May I ask, how exactly can this be achieved? I should imagine that
align="top" needs to be inserted somewhere but where and how exactly.
Remember, I'm a newbie!

Thanks,

Tony

In the table cell containing the table, add valign="top"

<td valign="top><table>....</table></td>

Nested tables are a good way of avoiding problems with column nand row
spans, as long as the nesting does not get too deep.

It's not so much deep nesting that is the problem, it's combining deep
nesting with merging and splitting cells. Straight tables, without col- or
rowspans, can be nested 7 deep or even more without significantly affecting
the browser attempting to render the page. But a 2-deep table with multiple
col- and rowspans (merged and split cells) can actually crash your browser.

In general, merging and splitting cells to achieve a particular layout is a
very poor method - that's the one that should be avoided!
