All bullet styles have disappeared and beenreplaced by TOC2 - I can't use bullets

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel A month or so ago, I wanted the TOC2 style in a particular document to display bullets at the beginning. It didn't really work, so I abandoned it.

However, since then whenever I click on the bullet icon to begin a bulleted list, the style changes to TOC2. The distance between the bullet and the text is huge and I can't change it. And there is no bullet for the following line - the style reverts to normal.

This means that I'm unable to use bulleted lists in my documents - all the bulleted styles have disappeared. If I try to define a new one, it just comes up as TOC2 again when I apply it, with the same problems.

I have replaced the normal template with renamed versions of other templates, but the problem won't go away - it seems to have affected every single one of my templates. Now none of them have usable bulleted styles.

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, and I have wasted hours trying to solve it. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:

The "Bullets" Icon gives you the "Most recently used bullets format".

If you customised the TOC2 style to be a bullet and applied it, that's your
most-recently used Bullet format, and that's what you get.

Go to Format>Bullets and Numbering, and "Reset" your bullet formats to their
default settings.

Cheers

The Normal.dotm template is 'special' -- you can't do-it-yourself. It must
be created by Word, although you can then open & modify it. That would
probably be more trouble than it's worth in this case & would not completely
resolve your problem [as explained below]. Instead, while no Office apps are
running, navigate to where Normal.dot is stored, delete the file, then
launch Word & it will build a new Normal.dotm for you.

A new Normal.dotm will provide 'factory spec' new documents created from
then on. That will *not* change any existing documents, though. The styles
in those documents were generated by the template in use a the time they
were created & are now stored in the documents, themselves. They are no
longer affected by which template is used to create new documents... You'll
have to correct them one-by-one. There are at least 4 approaches.

1- When you open a file containing the altered styles redefine the faulty
ones to the proper specs. Any content whose formatting is controlled by the
styles you change will be reformatted according to the new specs,

2- Create new styles in those documents then use the Formatting Palette -
Styles group to select all content formatted by a certain style then apply
the new one,

3- Use the Organizer [Format> Style - Organizer Button] to copy styles from
a 'clean' document into each of the faulty documents. Any styles in the
target document named the same as the imported styles will be replaced by
the incoming styles. The styled content will be reformatted accordingly, &

4- Select All & Copy the content of a current document, use Edit> Paste
Special - Unformatted Text into a new blank document, then format the new
document using the appropriate styles.
