alpha-numeric file listing in open dialog box

Amelia Bedelia

Previously, the listing of files in the open dialog box has been A, B, C and
1, 2, 3, with folders listed before files. About three weeks ago, I sem to
remember answering a dialog box prompt in a distracted hurry, after which the
open dialog box listing has been exactly reversed: files before folders; Z,
Y, X and 3, 2, 1.

In the MS Word knowledge base, there's an article about making this change
in Word 2000, but the directions do not seem to apply in 2002.

Creature of habit that I am, this small change in the order of my world has
slowed work to a crawl. I will appreciate any advice.

Sounds like you changed your default folder layout and it is affecting the
Open Dialog box in Word. Try this:

1. Open Windows Explorer, click the "View" menu and select "Details".
2. Click the "Name" heading above the column once or twice to make sure
everything is sorted alphabetically with folders on top then files from
A,B,C, etc.
3. Click the "Tools" menu, select "Folder Options".
4. Click the "View" TAB.
5. Click the "Apply to all folders" button and click "Yes".

That ought to do it.

In the File Open dialog, choose Details from the View menu, click on the
Name heading, and then (if necessary) switch back to whatever other view you
were using.

You can also just click on the "Name" bar above your file list in the Open
dialog box. It acts as a toggle switch for A-Z or Z-A. The other bars such
as "Date Modified" work the same way - if you click on the bar, it will order
the files from oldest to newest or vice versa.
