Using the FP 2003 Web component Table of Contents?

It seems very unstable and all it takes is to move it a bit on the page and
it dumps is contents. I also have no idea how to refresh it.
Anyone have experience with this creations component?

To see the results, you need to preview it in your browser. To refresh the
list, open the web site in FrontPage and do a Tools | Recalculate
Hyperlinks.

Thanks for the response Kathleen. When ever I attempt to do the refresh I
get a message back from FP:
------------------------
"The server sent a response which FrontPage could not parse. If you are
trying to connect to a Windows SharePoint Services server, check with the
server's administrator to make sure Windows SharePoint Services is installed
properly."
-------------------------

Over that past three years I have attempted to refresh the links with this
message coming back every time. This using FP 2000, FP 2003 and on two
different web hosting services.

Any idea what is going on?

Hi James:
If the Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks is not working on your live site, you
should check with your hosting company to find out why.

Possible reasons for the error message:
1) Server extensions not correctly installed
2) Web site too large for the systems involved, causing the server to
time out before completing the task in hand.

FrontPage itself does not have any size limits, but servers (hardware,
loading, network conditions) do - and these vary with load and network
conditions.

If the site is very large, it may help to split it into subwebs if your
host supports subwebs.

Thanks - I have asked my host to reinstall the extensions.

One thing he said was that I might be breaking the extensions by the way I
upload files to the server. What I do is to bring up FP and switch to the
files structure and then open the directory that I want to load to. Then I
use Windows Explorer to drag and drop the files where I want them. Am I
causing myself problems? If so how is it suppose to be done?

Hi Jim,

You are better off using the FrontPage publishing feature via http:// if it
is to a site that has the FrontPage extensions on it.

To do that simply open your local web..and then do a File | Publish Web/Site
| type in your domain of http://www.whateveritis.com You should then be
challenged for your user name and password..enter those and your site should
publish.

Thanks again. I'll look into that way of moving the files.
Now my web host tells me that the site is to big (about 1,000 meg) to use
FP. I guess they are really saying that they can't keep up with any updates
from FP. I think the problem is the number of directories that I use rather
than the amount of data in the site.

As stated in my previous post, you may need to split your web into
subwebs. FrontPage considers each web to be an independent website, so
publishing a subweb (or the root web without any subwebs) places a much
lower load on the server. However, if you use shared borders, FrontPage
includes or FrontPage navigation components splitting the web may not be
as simple as it sounds, due to the subweb independence. Try creating
subwebs on a backup of the site first.

Generally, the number of files in a website will have a much greater
affect on server performance than the number of folders.
