Another way of linking tasks between projects

Would like to know if there is another way of linking a task in one project
with that of another?

We have just implemented Enterprise Project Management using Project Server
2003. To link a task in one project to that of another, we were taught to
type the location of the task of the external project in the predecessor
collumn using the following syntax:
<>\name of the project to be connected to.published\position of the
target task

You can see that the process above requires typing the name of the project
which is open to many errors. Is there a better way to do this?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Open both projects in a master file than you can link them as if they were
in one project.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Jan for your reply.

We know about the master file option. Setting up a master file would make
things very easy. The linking was part of the procedure for setting up a
portfolio project. We opted for the portfolio setup instead of the master
file setup because we have to publish what ever we setup so that our
executives can see them using PWA. It is still not recommended to publish
master files in project 2003.

Hi Leo,

You don't have to save nor publish the master; the links are in the detail
projects and are saved with them.
The master only makes linking easier and can be forgotten about afterwards.

Hi Jan!

Will try it and see. Maybe it might be a good alternative to how we are
doing things. Thanks!
