applets and frames

That's the ticket. Sun (who originated Java) sued Microsoft (who was freely
distributing a MICROSOFT version of the Java engine), and the result was
that Sun shot itself in both feet.

In a way you are right. But the average computer or internet use does not
know this. It took me a while hoe to figure it out. Just consider there the
average internet user who does not know how to go about it will not visit
this web page will not try it again.
I have been working with the public almost 40 years or more and I know hat
I am talking about. You have out there various business out there that were
using applets and I7E will not show their product.

Kurt Knoll.

K

Kurt Knoll

I did already download the program but I think the average internet user
does not know about this and will not search any further.

Kurt Knoll.

That is why it is best to no longer use Java applets, unless you are going to provide a link to the
Sun web site.

IE7 would not show it, nor would IE6 or Firefox or Netscape if Java isn't
installed.

Java is/was not part of the browser, it was part of the Windows Operating
System.

Some distributors, such as Dell, have been shipping their computers with Sun
Java installed.

That's why people discourage the use of Java Applets on pages. Many new PCs
may come with a JVM installed but you can't be sure. You could add some
text that tells the user if they can't see this to go to http://java.sun.com
and download a Java Virtual Machine (kind of like people to when you need to
download acrobat reader to see files) but that's about all you can do.

D

David Berry

Yep. Although Java Applets were flaky things even when MS was offering
their JVM. Remember the dreaded hover buttons?

K

Kurt Knoll

There you guys in a way I have to agree with you. Fact number one is people
who did switch over to I.E. will not tell you if they can not see but it
would be nice if they let us know.

Kurt Knoll.

D

David Berry

Java isn't an IE / browser issue. It's part of the Operating System so if
they don't have a JVM then it won't be seen in any browser.

T

Tom Willett

It did work in previous browsers *if* it was installed on the O/S! Just
like it will work in current browsers if it's installed on the O/S.

I've never bothered to upgrade it on any PC. Have you found things that
didn't work without the upgrade? Just curious since I've never had much
need for the JVM except for sites that use applets.

Santa brought me a Dell laptoop and it has it on there...i thought it said
the install was 152 meg...but then again there was eggnog involved. Spent
