Assign resource group to activity

Sorry, no. Only individual resources can be assigned.

You can assign tasks to team leaders then have them assign individual tasks
as they see fit.

Hi Helge,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You can assign a group like "Carpenters" in exactly the same way as you
assign individuals. However, you cannot also assign a specific carpenter,
eg Fred, from within that generic resource groupling. It's one or the
other.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Glen,

Thanks for your help. If I have two resources(ig Glen and Helge) who always
work together I want to group them together and just assign the group to the
activities( and automaticty get Glen and Helge assigned), instead of
assigning both Helge and Glen to each activity by assigning Glen first and
then Helge.

In that case, create a new resource called "Glen and Helge" and assign that.
But you must delete both Glen and Helge as separate resources.

What about assigned manhours? In your case do I have to assign "Glen and
Helge" 200% to get the right amount of manhours on the activity ? I hoped to
just assign a pre-defined resourse group to get the right amount of manhours
at the activities.

Yes - "Glen & Helge" are two individuals and you could theoretically be
assigning Glen only, Helge only, or both of them together. An
assignment of the group at 100% indicates one of the two is assigned and
you don't care which one shows up - they're freely interchangeable
assets. An assignment of 200% indicates two bodies are required. BTW
the max allocation should read 200% for the group indicating it's made
up of 2 individuals.

True, Steve, but if you assign Glen to a task, Helge to another, and then
"Glen & Helge" to another all for the same time period you will get an
overallocation that Project won't reveal, as the resources are different as
far as Project is concerned. I always advise not to have single resources
in the Reseouce list if they are also expected to be assigned within a
group. One or the other in my book, unless you are very experienced and can
spot whenever a real overallocation occurs.

Yes - we're on the same wavelength.. I was assuming that "Glen and
Helge" was one entry in the resource table and there were no other
entries in the table covering either of them individually. I was trying
to say one could assign either one or both members of the group to a
task but that when only one member of the group was assigned, it was
impossible to designate WHICH member was being referred to. If you
assign "G&H" to Task A at 100% you can also assign "G&H" to simultaneous
Task B at 100% but if you assign "G&H" to Task A at 200%, that's it.
