Assigning a resource to a task that has a predecessor changes fini

Assigning a resource to a task that has a predecessor changes finish time.

Consider a scenario where my Project Calendar has working timings from 9:30
AM to 12:00 AM and 12:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Same pattern is followed for the
resource calendar.
I add 4 tasks. Link 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 with F-S links (0 day link lag).
Now when I assign a single resource to Task 1, the task finish date does not
change (its still 6:00 PM). However, assigning the resource to Task 3 or Task
4 (which have predecessors), the finish time changes to 10:30 AM from 6:00 PM.
Can someone explain me this behavior.
Note: One has to change the Date Format in the View Tab as seen from Tools
--> Options in MSP to show the time component as well.

What are the durations of those tasks? In the Tools, Option menu what is
the setting for Hours per Day? In the Tools, Resource Leveling menu, is
leveling set to manual or automatic? I suspect that what you're seeing is
either due to a mismatch between the Project calendar, the Resource
Calendat, and the Hours per dau or is due to tasks getting shifted by the
resource leveling tools. As you describe it, tasks 1 and 3 would initially
be at the same time. Likewise tasks 2 and 4. Assigning the same resource
to all of them would mean that he's scheduled to be on two tasks at once,
something that is not physically possible.

hi Bandu Patil,

Schedule is calculated by counting the amount of active working time between
the scheduled start and end of the task for the assigned resources. It is
when you assign resources that the Duration gets calculated. For example,
Chris is scheduled to work on the "Write proposal" task on Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday. Jamie is scheduled to work on the "Write proposal" task
on Wednesday and Thursday. Sean is scheduled to work on the "Write proposal"
task on the following Monday and Tuesday. The working span of the "Write
proposal" task, and therefore its duration, is five days (Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday).

The important thing to note is that Schedule is worked out when Resources
are assigned. That is, the active working time of resources contributes to
the schedule.

Regards,

Haris
