Assigning multiple resources to a single task with work field defi

R

Rex O

When a task has the work specified and there are two or more resources
assigned to the task and the first resource is assigned only 10% of the time,
the task duration becomes 10xWork time. It seems like a bug to me, please
confirm and/or sugest alternative solution. Problem does not happen if we
specify the duration and leave the work field blank.

Hi RexO,

No, I wouldn't say it is a bug -- but it certainly can be confusing
behavior. If you add work before assigning resources, Project says that
is total work for the task. When you assign resources but don't tell
project any other details about the resource assignment -- project will
assume you wish to assign the resource at his/her maximum units (10% in
the scenario you describe) and will adjust the duration of the task
using the following formula:

Duration = Work/Units

If you do not enter work, Project will calculate work based upon the
formula
Work = Duration * units.

If you would like to enter work for multiple resources, you may try
working with the Task Entry view. From the Gantt chart, split your
screen through Window > Split. You can then assign resources in the
Task Form at the bottom of the screen and specify resource work for each
resource you assign.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
