Assigning Resources to part of a task

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows the easiest way of doing the following.

Fixed duration task of 5 days
2 Resources to be assigned
Resource 1 will be 100% for the 5 days - no problems there
Resource 2 will be 100% (or 8 hrs per day) for days 2, 3 & 4 (24 hrs in Total)

Under the 'Task Usage - Usage' view it is possible to put 0 hrs in day 1 and
day 5 for Resource 2, which is fine for the simple example above, but not
very practical if the task is a year long.

I have also tried using the Start and Finish date options under 'Assignment
Information' dialog box but this alters the task duration.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

If the case is that the 2nd resource is not available to the project on
Mondays and Fridays, you can update the working time for the resource:
- Resource Sheet, double-click the resource
- Select working time tab
- Select the Monday column header
- Hold down the Ctrl key and select the Friday column header
- Choose the nonworking time radio button
- Select OK

Now if you have a fixed duration task and you assign the resource to the
task, s/he will be assigned Tuesdays thru Thursdays only for the duration of
the task.

Thanks for your reply John.

Unfortunately it's not that uniform. Any resource may be required for any
length of time on any particular task. I think the only way is to manually
put the hrs in via the Work View for each resource.

Wiith the task in question selected, split the screen (Windows menu). The
bottom windo has a number of views that show resource information, along
with a dashboard" of task information like duration, task type etc. In the
resource column enter resource 1, 100%, 40 hours and resource 2, 100%, 24
hours and click OK. This will have them both starting together and working
for 5 and 3 days respectively - we're almost there. Now right click in the
bottom pane and switch to the Resource Schedule view. Resource 2 is
actually suppoased to join the task 1 day after it starts so in that view's
"delay" column (not "leveling delay") enter 1 day. By the way, the start
and finish dates shown for each resource line are the start and finish for
that resource only on the task, another way of adjusting assignments of this
nature.

I use almost this exact scenario in my project classes with two cases: Case
1, resource 2 is doing 5 hours of work at 100%, interpreted as spending
full-time the first morning working with resource 1 training him and then
leaving to go do something else the rest of the week; and Case 2, resource 2
is also spending 5 hours of work but assigned at 12%, meaning he's
supervising and checking in for about an hour a day while resource 1
actually is doing the task.
