assigning work to a material resource

i have a company that performs audio/video installations. i want to include
"provide and install in-ceiling speakers" as a task. I have a material
resource which is the model of the speaker and have assigned a per use cost
for it. In addition i would like to assign 1 hour of work to the same
resource. When I assign the material resource the work feild goes to zero?
do i need to do a rollup task one that has the material resource assigned and
then one that has a work resource assigned?

jobeyone,
First let's clarify something. A speaker is a resource but it can't do
any work. A live body is required to actually install the speaker and
that live body is a work resource.

There are several ways to handle this. One method is to assign both a
work resource (for the labor) and a material resource (the speaker) to
the overall task of installing a speaker. On the Resource Sheet set up a
work resource (e.g. Joe) at whatever hourly rate Joe goes for. Then set
up a material resource and put the cost of that resource in either the
Std Rate field, (for a material resource it will be in terms of cost per
each instead of $/hr as it is for a work resource), or in the Cost/Use
field. Then on the Gantt Chart, set up the task and assign both the work
resource at however many hours it will take and the material resource at
a quantity of "1". If a single task represents the installation of
multiple speakers (say in a ballroom) then give Joe the Work hours it
takes to install them all and show a quantity of however many speakers
will be installed for the [speakers] material. The Cost field will
reflect the total cost.

Hope this Helps.
