Auto spell check won't work

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I was sent a deck from a windows 2007 user and after trying all the usual steps (check spelling as you type: on, latest office update, repair permissions ok) the spelling is not checked as I type. It does however work in another deck so it seems to be something with this deck/template.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Two other possibilities come immediately to mind:

The check is also in place for Hide Spelling Errors in the Spelling Prefs,
or

The Language of the document is set to something different than what you're
expecting it to be.

Thanks for the suggestions unfortunately the Hide Spelling Errors is unchecked and the document language is English (US).

Are there any settings in the template that could override prefs and how do you see them?

I'm not sure what else to check. The Options in 2007 are essentially the
same as the Preferences you find in the Mac versions. The proofing tools are
controlled by those settings, so even if there were something in the
template the settings would be visible - and changeable - in files based on
it. And PPT 2007 doesn't provide the Protection features found in the other
programs in that version so there should be no restrictions.

Are the errors caught when you run the Spell Check?

You might also confirm that the checkbox in the lower left corner of the
Language dialog is completely cleared... Click outside the slides then key
Command+A, open the Tools> Language dialog. If there is a check or a dash in
that "Do not check spelling" box click it until it's cleared.

The Language dialog checkbox is not checked or have a dash in it.

Regarding spell checking errors. Some words are recognized as misspellings (both as with a red underline and flagged if you run the spell checker) but they tend to be words that are definitely not in the dictionary e.g "Strawman". Words that should be in the dictionary are not flagged either way e.g. "perforamance".

Then I'm afraid I'm at a loss ‹ especially since all seems to work as it
should in other files. The only other explanation I can offer is the remote
possibility that somebody previously made the same errors in that file &
marked them to be Ignored.

AFAIK, Language setting don't even carry through to slides if you set it on
the placeholders in the Masters... And even if it did, the settings in
Language would indicate same.

Here's something interesting. If I paste *a slide* from the deck with issues into a completely different deck that uses a different template. Spelling doesn't work.

However, if I paste the text box from the deck with issues into a slide that originated in another deck with a different template, the spelling works.

I think I have a workaround.
