AutoCorrect in Office 2000

Daz

I have just encountered the problem of not being able to add new entries to
AutoCorrect. When I try to enter a new entry I get the following error
message and the entry isn't saved:

"Your AutoCorrect file, C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\MSO2057.acl, could not be saved. The file may be
read-only, or you may not have permission to modify the file."

It is not read-only and I am the Administrator and it has always worked
before.

Any ideas?

You may want to verify that you are in fact still the owner of the file.
See the security tab on the file properties, Also Start, Help, and see
"Take Ownership of file or folder".

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about ownership.

I have checked that I have ownership (in safe mode, as I am running XP Home)
of the file and folder but still cannot add entries, getting the same error
message when I try to add entries to AutoCorrect.

On the security tab, under "Group or user names", Administrators, SYSTEM and
My Name (an administrator) are listed.

The permissions for all of these names are; Full Control, Modify, Read &
Execute, Read and Write.

That would be the necessary permissions. Can you rename the file in
explorer? Or copy it? I'm wondering if there may be some other issue
causing this. Anti-virus software locking it perhaps?

I must thank you Bob I for the help that you are giving me. I am now
learning quite a bit about permissions.

The funny thing is that the Spell Checker works fine and allows me to edit
the Custom.dic, which has the same permissions as the MSO2057.acl file. I
can rename and copy MSO2057.acl using explorer but just can't modify it
using AutoCorrect.

I have tried turning off my anti-virus program to no avail.

I have also tried giving the file "Full Control" for "Everyone" but still no
joy.

Only things I can find in the knowledge base are possible file
corruption and to use Detect and repair in Word, Help. But it seems the
error you receive is not the same. Try the "Detect and Repair",
otherwise if someone else has and idea they may jump in.

"Detect and Repair" was one of the first things that I tried. The problem is
the same for Excel, Word and PP so it could well be a corruption of the
MSO2057.acl file.

It is not that an important problem but once I have got my teeth into
something I do love to track it down. I may try a un/re-install of Office or
maybe upgrade to a later version. I will be very disappointed if the prob is
still there after an upgrade.

Thanks for all of your help, Daz.

Just guessing, in Explorer, try renaming normal.dot to normal.old and
the then start Word. Don't know if the index is still in normal
template, but worth a shot.

If the file permissions check out then if you are using Norton AV go
to Norton Options and in the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable
Office Plug-in".

This option is known to cause various conflicts in Office. Note
disabling Norton does not disable the Office Plug-in option. The only
way to rule it out is to exit Word, and Outlook if using Word as your
email editor, disable the option, and then start Word again.
