automatic documentnumber

I would like to be able to give each new document (letter) i create in word
an automatic number, as reference.

can anyone tell me how to do that?

and what if i want to start numberen from a specific number <> 001?
i thought that changing Order = 1 in Order = whatever might do the job, but
it doesn't
