Automatic Outline Header

I have been creating documents that are basically outline with up to 7
sub-levels. I would like level 1 to have a certain font format and spacing,
level 2 to have it's own, and so on.
I understand how to do this by assigning different formats to Headings, but
that necessitates I use the "Increase Indent" and "Decrease Indent" feature.

I want Word to automatically format my headings depending on how many times
I press the TAB button. That way I will not have to use the mouse.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for. But, from Word's
menu, choose Tools - AutoCorrect Options - AutoFormat as You Type tab, and
enable "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces".
