automatic update of linked objects

I'm using Word 2003, and have inserted two linked objects
into my document - one graphic JPG file and one other
Word document. I want these to automatically update every
time I load the main document.

According to the Help information, I should simply be
able to go the Edit menu, select Links, select the
objects, and then click "Automatic update." However, when
I try this, the Automatic update option is grayed out and
I can't seem to do anything to ungray it.

I'd appreciate any solutions. Thanks.
