automatically update customize field

I have created a custom field, but the field doesn't automatically
update.

The only way I can get it to update is by right clicking the field|
Customize Fields...
then pressing Formula and Ok.

Is a macro necessary for this? Or is there some other way of
switching on automatic updating of custom fields?

All custom fields should recalculate automatically provided automatic
calculation is on, which is the default setting. Check Tools, Options,
Calculate tab and make sure Automatic is checked.

Is this a custom formula that you are using? You can also hit F9 to force
and auto calculate and see if that does the trick. I found in MSPS 2003
that some formulas would not update even with auto calculate option turned
on and an F9 was required to force and autocalculate each time a change was
made.
