Hi Stevo,
how to avoid the opening of the "select data source"
window when opening a document previously saved with data
source link (VFP table) ?
Ummmm.

1. Version of Word involved?
2. Why would this be displaying? Is the data source no
longer present, or what?

If the document is being opened by the user, then there's no
way to suppress this message. If it's being opened using
automation, suppressing DisplayAlerts will work in later
versions of Word (not in 97, for sure; can't remember for
2000).

Hi cindy

tks yr reply

1. I use word 2003

2. I create a table with Visual Foxpro 8 in directory
c:\temp. All data source connections have been specified
in directory \My documents\My data source.
When openning word 2003 thru VFP instructions thru ODBC
word 2003 is asking to select a data source whilst it is
not necessary. By cliking the open button without
selecting any data source it works fine. I just want to
get rid of this unecessary diaglog box. Any idea ??

You're a bit too terse, I'm afraid :) What do you mean by
"all data source connections have been specified [in the
MyDatasource directory]"? That you've created an *.odc file
that should be taking care of the connection? Since you
later say "ODBC" I don't think so, but I can't image what
else you could mean.

Are you automating opening the mail merge document? Or is
the user opening it?

Hi Cindy

- Our visual FoxPro program creates a .dbf table in
directory C:\Temp\
- We saved the word document with the mail merge
configured with the required data source (the .odc file).
This document is automatically opened by our FoxPro
program.
When the document is being opened (by the program), word
ask the user for a data source with the "Select Data
Source" dialog box whilst it is not necessary as the
document is loaded successfully with the right data after
clicking "open" button (and without selecting any data
source)

We have this problem only with Word 2003 (in the previous
versions of word, the user was not prompted for this
dialog box)
Is there a registry key to modify (or other) in order to
get rid of this unecessary dialog box?

We used Word 2002 and we upgraded with Word 2003 (pack
Office).
With both versions, this works fine.
The only difference is that word 2003 prompts the "Select
Data Source" dialog box when word 2002 does not prompt it

OK, if you used Word 2002, and you have a *.odc file, then
it seems to me that you're NOT using an ODBC, but an OLE DB
connection. Is there a particular reason you chose this
connection method when setting the mail merge up in Word
2002, or did you just use Word's default? Would you have a
reason for NOT wanting to use pure ODBC?

Also: please start with a new document in the Word 2003
interface. Working as an end-user (no automation), link up
to your vfp data source and set up a "test" main merge
document. Save and close it. Re-open it. Do you get the same
message in this case, or does it work without displaying it?

Hi Cindy

tks a lot.

the second solution works fine.
starting a new doc from blank and using copy/paste and re-
saving reactualizes the database link.

season greetings

Thanks for letting me know :) The problem was either a
damaged document file, or a problem with the Word 2002 <->
Word 2003 interface.

So, if you're still exploring in this area, I would be
interested to know if going back to 2002, then again to 2003
brings the problem up again :)

Roberto Targa

Hi all.
I have the same problem using a text tabdelimited file as a data source .
Every time you open the template a very annoying window pops up asking to
confirm :
"select * from MydataSorcePath".
The strange thing is that latest beta 2003 didn'have this.
Any way to get rid of this window?

TIA

Hi Roberto,

This is a security feature that was added quite late in beta (I saw it in a
version that was restricted to developers, for example). See this KB
article

SQL Command" Message When You Open a Word Document - 825765
