describe one method that could be used to create text in a shaded box. any help would be appreciated..

Well you could use Insert>TextBox. Using the mouse size your texbox.
Select the box then right click and select Format textbox. Using the Colors
and Lines Tab>Color window choose your shading. Then type in the text.
