Bibliography not printing

V

Vijay J.

I have a document in Word 2000 in which I have used
Endnote 5 for references. Everything was working OK, i.e.
the citations were fine, and the bibliography generated
at the end was also in order. I could print the document
as it appeared on the screen.

However, Now I am working on a different computer, and
though the document now looks as before on the screen,
the bibliography at the end is not printing (though it is
visible on the screen alright, as before). When I give
the print command and click ok, the list of bibliography
reduces to a single word EN.REFLIST, and prints like
this. I have tried the Format Bibliography command from
the Endnote toolbar, which brings back the list of
bibliography in the correct form, but same thing happens
again when I print it. I have also tried deleting and re-
inserting some citations, but no success.

I am still using the same versions of Word and Endnote on
the new machine, and have observed that this problem
occurs in every new document which I create on this
machine, whatever may be the Endnote style.

Any suggestions...?
Many Thanks.

It is printing the field codes instead of the field result. Endnote uses
fields to format the biblio. Go to Tools | Options, and on the Print tab,
uncheck "field codes".

Dayo, Thanks for your suggestion. However, the problem
still persists. In fact I found the option "field codes"
already unchecked when I tried to uncheck it the way as
suggested.

If I try to "Toggle Fields" in my word document, the
EN.REFLIST changes to {QUOTE EN.REFLIST}.

I have also tried to uncheck the "Update Field" option
from the Print menu before printing the document, it
works fine and prints the bibliography as desired (full
list), however, I am still puzzled as to why this is
needed to be done, when normally everything should be
fine even when this option is checked.

Hi Vijay,

Not totally clear on what you mean, here...

I hear you saying that if you uncheck Update Fields in Print Options, then
the bibliography prints out fine. So the problem is solved, but you don't
understand why. If that's wrong, let me know.

Actually, if that's the case that makes sense, maybe--with that option
checked, then Word tries to update the biblio field on printing, but the
EndNote library not being open, or Word not having the ability to update an
EndNote field, it produces an error message EN.REFLIST. So unchecking it
could fix the problem.

This seems like it could cause problems for many people, I'm surprised not
to have realized it before....I'll have to check on my own machine later to
see if it is the case across the board. I don't suppose you have your old
machine available to run a test and see if the same thing happens, just to
confirm nothing else is causing the problem?

Oh, and by the way, don't change the subject when replying--not everybody
uses the same interface and changing the subject makes it more difficult.
If you have problems replying to my message, it's due to a fault in the web
interface, by the way.
