Blank email in OL2003

M

Mark Stinson

I've seen several posts along these lines without anything that appears to
be a workable solution, so I'll toss mine out partly for commisseration
purposes and partly to alert Microsoft to what appears to be an
unacknolwedged problem and give some additional info.

I upgraded Office XP to Office 2003, including Outlook and patched/updated
Office immediately afterward. I am running on WinXP Pro, all current service
packs and patches installed. Drives and partitions are NTFS. I am not on an
Exchange network, so Outlook is just my normal POP, IMAP and HTML Mail
client.

All of my email is showing a blank body. It doesn't matter whether it's
plain text, HTML or RTF, they are all blank. Nothing is there when I try to
select or highlight anything in the message body, though the header info
displays correctly and the message size info appears to be correct.
Attachments appear on the messages as usual and can be opened normally. This
is true not only for incoming mail, but also for mail in the Sent Items
folder and archived items.

Oddly enough, another user on the same machine doesn't have this problem.
All of the email bodies are there just as they should be. The only major
difference between the user accounts is that my account has administrative
privileges, did the upgrade and was the first to try to use Outlook after
the upgrade. The other account is a plain user account, launched Outlook
second and does not have a POP or IMAP email account (just Hotmail).

A fix or workaround would be really nice at this point. It's a bit of a pain
to pick up HTML mail through the web browser, but not being able to read the
regular mail is killin' me.

Hi Marc,

It is a known issue. The hotfix isn't publicly available yet so you'll need
to contact Microsoft to obtain it. Form more info see;
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833984

As a pssoible workaround you could also export your current pst-file to a
new one.

If you choose the workaround please post back your findings so users can
benefit from your experience with this.

Regards,

Note that out of the hundreds of millions of users of Outlook, only a very
few (hundreds maybe) are complaining of this problem - therefore, for the
vast majority of users, Outlook works as advertised. Never make the mistake
of believing that your user experience is the norm.

Microsoft attempts to program its applications to run on every possible
combination of hardware and software out there. However, there will be
occasions where a particular hardware/software combination has not been
tested or the error does not show until the user combines a set of
combinations to trigger it.

| I have exactly the same problem on two computers. After reading your
| note I tried an experiment and created a new user without admin
| privleges. On the same computer. Outlook 2003 then displayed my e-mail
| messages!
|
| I have also contacted MS and got their hotfix 833986. It did not make
| any difference! How can they release an e-mail product that is not able
| to display e-mail messages?
