Blurred Image with Linked File

Stuart_m

I am creating a Publisher document in booklet format which is to be printed
on A3+ paper (approx 19inch by 11inch). It is to be a fine-art document so
image quality is very important.

My image source files are TIFF format and 110MBytes in size - it contains
48bit colour (ie 3 16-bit channels). [NB I get the same problem when I use a
24bit colour file.]

If I embed a single image and drag it to full double page (ie booklet
format), the image is sharp.

If I specify that the image is to be a linked file, Publisher only allows me
to have 300dpi. As soon as I accept this option, the image goes blurred. If I
save this linked file documnet, the size fore the linked image file is only
245KB (I don't know if this file contains the image or just pointers to the
original image file).

Can you explain what I should do to get the linked file at full quality (ie
not blurred).

My printer is an Epson Stylus Phot o R2400. I sepcify A3+ paper size in the
Page Layout.

None of the sugested resolution methods in the link you provided work in my
situtation. For small files, below about 8MB there seems to be no problem.

Original picture information is lost or changed when you insert a linked picture in

Maybe try resizing the image to the proportions you need before inserting it
into the pub design.

Publisher has a 16MB size limit on imported graphics. In Publisher 2000 and
below, this is on the uncompressed size, as Publisher will decompress all
images. In Publisher 2003, this is on the compressed size.

Publisher will embed all graphics, including linked graphics. This means
that there is some image there if the original is accidentally deleted.
Have you tried printing your publication? There is an option to "Print
full-resolution linked graphics". Try printing to PDF with this option and
seeing whether the full-resolution original TIFF image or the
lower-resolution Publisher graphics transfer through.

Publisher has problems dealing with some variants of TIFF file, including
those from Photoshop. You might consider PNG as an alternative format
(although I'm uncertain as to whether PNG supports 48-bit colour)

Ed,

You have solved my problem !

Initially I had been inserting an embedded image, then using Graphics
Manager to 'save as linked'. When I did this screen and printed images were
BOTH fuzzy.

Using 'Link to File' on the Insert Picture screen still gives me a fuzzy
image on the screen BUT the printed version is OK - and it is the printed
version which I am interested in.

From the point of view of screen layout it would be nice to see the screen
image sharp, but I can work round that - but don't let that stop Microsoft
from making that fun ctionality available !!!

Thanks again, and best wishes for the New Year.
