Bug; Word confuses txt and html

R

Ron Hunt

If a text-ontly (txt) Word 2000 file contains the
string "< head >" (WITH THE SPACES REMOVED!) then it gets
very confused.

If you create this file:

line 1
line 2 # <head>
line 3 # <tail>
line 4

and save it as txt - then try and open it with Word. You
may be surprised at the result!

I have a large ksh script that I have maintained for a
long time - using Word to edit it. As soon as the <head>
string was inserted the fun began.

Hi Ron,

I wouldn't call this beast a "bug".
Word tries to figure out the type of file you want to open. Since
extensions (*.doc, *.html, *.txt ...) don't always exist, and don't have
enough information to specify the file type anyway, Word looks into the
file itself, and tries to figure out the format.

You can set "Tools > Options > General > Always confirm conversions".
99% of the time, the correct file type will already be selected.
If not, you can quickly change it.

You'll never get the choice for Word *.docs; Word doesn't allow you to open
them with a filter of your choice.

Greetings,
Klaus
