buying a different office version than the trial

I downloaded Office 2007 Trial a couple of months ago, and it has just
expired. i would like to purchase the Home & Student version instead of the
full version. If I uninstall the full version before purchasing the Home &
Student version, will I lose all the Word and Excel documents I have created?

Would I have to purchase and install Home & Student immediately in order to
keep my documents, or can I wait a couple of weeks?

No.

No and yes.

As you are not obviously looking at using Outlook, while you are waiting to
purchase Home and Student, have a look at Open Office. The latest version
will open Office 2007 documents. It's filly featured, is free and has NO
activation.

Have a look here:

Deleting the program will not delete the files.

It is best to delete the trial first or you may have problems
with the new version.

I like the suggestion to try Open Office. I would suggest
that you delete the trial version and then download Open Office and
see if you like it. If not then delete it and purchase the Home &
Student. I think that is what I would do if I were in you situation.

I have not tried Open Office, but it appears a lot of people
are happy with it.

As indicated, Outlook or e-mail handling could be a little
problem if you need that. I am not sure how this would all play out
for e-mail for you.

No need - OO will happily co-exist with MS Office. I have OO3 and MSO 2007
on this very machine...

Docs and data are not changed or removed by uninstalling Office
You can wait as long as you like the data remains unless you delete it
PS You are aware H&S doesnt have Outlook?

Thanks all, for the help.

I don't use Outlook, so I'm not really worried about H&S not including it.

I checked out Open Office. I looks great, but the problem is that I not
only need to read the MS docs I created, but I also need to edit them or
create new ones that I'll be able to use at work. We only have MS, and they
will not allow the download of Open Office.

One more question--there are two Office-related programs: 2007 Microsoft
Office system and Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office suites.

Do I uninstall both of these and if yes, should one be uninstalled before
the other? I'm thinking I can keep the Activation Assistant since I'll be
downloading another MS Office product, but I'm not sure.

Not a problem.

Also not a problem.

Balmer would get a monopolistic hard on if he heard that.

You have to uninstall both, then clear out temp files (Disk Cleanup) and
reboot before installing any paid for version from CD

Interesting. When I looked at their website, it seemed as though you could
only read Word and Excel docs, not create docs that could be used with those
products. I couldn't find so much information on their homepage about
compatibility, though. I'll give it a try and see what happens. If it does
everything I need, I'll save some money!

They're getting rid of all the Macs at work, too, but those were all used
with MS programs, too...

Good to know about cleaning the temp files. I'd never have thought of
that... Thanks!

You can also create .pdf files and, of course, Open Office formats. OO
can read, edit and create MS documents no problem. Once you get it
installed, open up a file you created with Office and you'll see.

Let me know.
