Can I use Small Bus Office 2000 with Windows XP?

I have Office 2000 Small Business on my old computer. Just purchased a new
one with Windows XP and I'm being told that my Office 2000 Small Business is
not compatible. Can I load 2000 on this computer and then upgrade it to 2003
version or do I have to purchase 2003 as a new package?

There is no reason why your Small Business 2000 wouldn't work on your new computer.

If your version was purchased with the previous computer as an OEM
installation (most common purchase for Office SBE) then it cannot be
installed on your new computer as it was tied to the old one. You can,
probably, use it as an upgrade version if you only place the CD in the drive
when asked for a qualifying product and remove it when it has been verified.
It depends on the OEM version.

Mary? The CD says 'designed for Microsoft Windows NT Windows 98' does this
make any difference in trying to load it when I have Windows XP now? (I
Windows ME on my old computer and it ran fine on it.)

Short for original equipment manufacturer, which is a misleading term for a company
that has a special relationship with computer producers. OEMs buy computers in bulk
and customize them for a particular application. They then sell the customized
computer under their own name. The term is really a misnomer because OEMs are not the
original manufacturers -- they are the customizers.

Thank you Milly... please excuse my ignorance but what does OEM stand for?

Actually, you are incorrect. One of the largest OEMs, Dell, puts together
the computer (not purchased) from parts assembled from throughout the world
and then sells the resulting computer. OEMs are also small system builders
(such as a close friend) who will assemble a pre-ordered custom computer,
preinstall software (licensed via an OEM license with Microsoft, Adobe,
etc.) and deliver it directly to the purchaser.

I am afraid you are a bit asea when it comes to the definition of the OEM.

If you re-sell Microsoft software on a system that you build from
parts/components and resell it, it is an oem licensed installation.
