can list of emails be transferred to safari address book?

I have emails already typed into excel, and I saved the whole worksheet with all the other info as a .csv file, but Safari says it is not a valid .csv file.
Do I have to set up Outlook first?

I'm afraid I'm really not clear on the issue :) Safari doesn't have an
address book - it's a web browser. Although it should be able to open a .csv
file it merely presents it as text, so it wouldn't do any good for email
addresses. Also, Outlook doesn't exist for the Mac - it's a PC-only email
client which has never been updated for OS X.

We're certainly wiling to assist but you'll have to be more clear & accurate
as to what you're trying to do and what you're trying to do it with. What
information do you actually have in the Excel file? How is it arranged?

I'm assuming the data includes email *addresses* not *emails* - the latter
suggests email messages rather than addresses. What email program are you
using that you want to import that data to? Apple Mail, Entourage...?

The AddressBook application that is included with your Mac computer
can import names, addresses, etc. From Menu, select Import. More
details are in the Help. Entourage has a similar capability.

I'm sorry, let me be more specific now that the kids have left for school. I volunteered to type a roster for the Lacrosse team. Each piece of information is in a separate cell.

Now we would like to capture the 120+ names and email addresses and send out emails. I use yahoo on a safari browser on my mac, and the coach uses his blackberry and gmail. Not sure which browser, or if that matters.

I re-saved the document as a .csv file, and then tried to import it into my yahoo address book. It was invalid. Yahoo's instructions say it can accept a .csv file exported from Outlook, but I'm using a Mac. Is there a mac-equivalent for Outlook, and do you think that would work with yahoo? Yahoo doesn't give an option like Apple mail or Entourage, and I have never even explored them.

Thank you for your help and your time. I would really appreciate not having to re-type all those names and addresses.

OK, that makes a little more sense :) I'm not very familiar with Yahoo
mail, but it would seem to me that if it's supposed to accept a CSV file it
should certainly accept a Text file. As long as the Excel data is in
consecutive columns & rows I save it as Tab Delimited Text.

There are several different flavors of CSV, however, so if it must be that
format - or if the Text file fails - try the other CSV variations in the
Save As list starting with Windows Comma Separated... Yahoo wouldn't be the
only one guilty of anti-Mac discriminatory practices :)

If still no luck get in touch with Yahoo support & see what they recommend.

Let's be a little kinder to Yahoo. The CSV file would need to be
arranged with the proper headers in order for it to work as an imported
file.

Hi Jimmy -

A bit touchy aren't we? Got some Yahoo stock? :) Just allowing for the
possibility, but valid structure of the data is important regardless of file
format.

When you say "headers" are you referring to captions/field names or actual
file headers?

Poor Yahoo. First they thought Steve Ballmer was hot on their trail, and
then he went and asked people what search engine they used.

Nope. Don't have any Yahoo stock. Glad, too. It seems to be a stagnant
company.

The link I used refers to yet another link that offers specifics as to
how data is to structured within the csv file. Just any old csv file
won't work.
