Cannot change shade color or add grid lines

I have been working with a large spreadsheet using alternate shading.
When trying to clear the row color not all of the rows/cells changed
color. When I go to each cell >highlight>and try to change
individually still no change. I am also unable to add grid lines.
Please advise. I am on 2008 for Mac. OS 10.5.7. Thank you

Sounds like you may have Conditional Formatting applied - that will
override the direct cell formatting.

You also can't *add* gridlines, per se. gridlines can be
displayed/hidden the using Preferences/View checkbox. But if any color
is applied to the cell, that color extends to the border of the cell,
hiding the gridlines. Choose No Fill in cell shading to allow the
gridlines to be visible.

Alternatively, if you want to keep the shading, add borders to the cells.

Try this:

Select the range and choose Format, Conditional Formatting, and Delete the
conditions.
