Cannot display Text1 field next to gantt bar

Hello,
I am having a problem displaying a custom Text1 field next to a bar in MS
Project 2007. I would like text such as "CDR" to appear to the left and
standard Finish to the right of a milestone. I tried the following:

- Within the Custom Fields window, I ensure Task is selected, then Rename
the "Text1" field.
- In the Rename Field window, I enter "CDR" and now see that "Text1" has
been replaced with "CDR (Text1)" in the Custom Fields window.
- I then double click on the bar of interest, select the Bar Text tab, and
select "Text1 (CDR)" within the Left entry. I'm not sure why the slight
change in the () location. The Right entry already displays "Finish" as
default.

The Finish date shows, but the custom text does not. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help!
Pete.

Pete, if I understood you correctly, I think the problem is that; when you
rename Text1 to be "CDR" you, only, renamed the title of Text1 column and you
have not entered data next to each task under "CDR" column and, therefore,
when you select "CDR" Text to appear to the left of the bar of interest you
would see nothing simply, because you haven't entered data next to that
particular task under 'CDR' column.

hope I answered the question, feedback pls...

Hello Ammar,

I am still unable to display my custom field. I am not sure I fully
understand the uses of the Text1 field, or a field in general for that
matter. I am not using the field to define a new column, but rather to label
a gantt bar. I would like it to look like:
CDR <> 9/1
where "CDR" is my custom Text1 field, "<>" is the milestone gantt bar and
"9/1" is the finish date. I can use the field to define a new column, and
add data within each field within that column for each task, but that doesn't
appear to help me label the bar.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK Pete,
Let me put it like that; if you need to label a Gantt Bar by, say, Text 1
(CDR), you need to do the following: as you said earlier you firstly, define
a new column i.e. (Text 1) and add data i.e. (CDR) within the task of
interest within Text 1 column, then you double click on the bar of interest,
on Format Bar window - Left box select Text 1 from drop-down list, "CDR" will
appear to the left side of the bar of interest.

What I want to say is that Text 1 is a custom field for ALL tasks and you
can’t customize it for one task, that’s why even after you customize Task 1
to be for CDR still you need to insert data into the task of interest.

hope that will work

It works! Thanks for the help Ammar. Microsoft should append their help
descriptions for this item.

Best Regards,
Pete.

Pete,

I think you'll find that there is a lot of documentation about fields,
including detailed descriptions of both custom and built in fields.
Fields are important and make Project a powerfull tool.
