Custom text field problem when adding to global

S

[Project Professional 2007]

Hi everyone.

I've created a custom text field which uses a lookup table and shows graphic
indicators. I did this via Project Professional and working with the
"Computer" Account (I mean, in the local machine). This field works fine only
for the specific project where I created it, because when I add it to the
Global and try to use it in a new project, the values of the lookup table are
not available on the list.

I've tried with several fields: Text1, Text2, Text3 and always happens the
same.
I already had created this field with Project 2003 and everything worked then.

What else do I have to do in Project 2007?

Since you mention the local account, I infer that you are actually
working in a Server environment.

Is it possibly the case that your organisation doesn't allow changes to
the global.mpt?

Alternatively, is it the case that your organisation doesn't allow
changes to certain views in their global.mpt. You could try making a
customised view similar to the existing one and seeing if your changes
stick in that.

Hi Rod.

Yes, I did that. I copy the field from the project where I created it to the
global using the Organizer. Nonetheless, when I insert that field in a new
Project, no values appear on the list. If I search the properties of the
field (in the new project) I find that the lookup table is empty, but it's
funny because the graphical indicators do appear.

Do I have to copy the lookup table to the global as well? How do I do that?

By the way, this field is at task level. Thanks.

Hi Rod.

This happens to me with or without SP2. I've tried this on three different
machines (one of them with SP2).

What else should I check before copying the field to the global? As I said
before, I did exactly the same on Project 2003 and had no problem.

Thank you!

Ideas:

1. Are you sure which global.mpt you are writing to? Write something
else, other than this field, and confirm the timestamp on the file changes.
2. I'm confused by your nomenclature "Computer" account. Why don't you
use your own login id on that machine? Again, see No. 1 above. My
default the global.mpt is in your own windows "profile" buried down in
the hierarchy of files.
3. Does it work to save other things into global.mpt, e.g. a filter,
table, and view?
4. Perhaps start again? Copy out of the current global.mpt anything
that's useful into a regular file, then rename it (same as deleting it
from Project's perspective). The restart project and it should re-create
the global.mpt.

Hi Rob. Thanks for your ideas.

I'm pretty sure I'm copying the field to right global file (global.MPT). In
fact, I did the following test:
a. Created two custom text fields (1 using a lookup table and 1 using a
formula) and then I added them to the global.
b. Created two custom number fields (1 using a lookup table and 1 using a
formula) and then I added them to the global.
c. Closed the project where I created the fields and opened a new one.
d. Inserted the four custom fields.

After doing this I realized than ONLY the custom fields which involved a
lookup table didn't work well, no values appeared on the list. On the other
hand, the formula fields had no problem at all.

That's why I suspect that this problem has something to do with lookup
tables, but I don't know what should I do.

Finally, with "Computer" account I'm refering to the PROFILE you select when
you open Project Professional. In other words, I'm not connecting to a
project server account.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Pardon me for bumping in, but I don't believe you are doing anything
wrong Sebastian. I can reproduce exactly what you state using
Project 2007 SP-2 Creating a custom field with a lookup table and
then copying to Global does not copy the lookup fields.

It's an error that's been around since at least June 2008.

A work around is to import the lookup table.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello Sebastian,

For some reason, the Global.mpt file won't hold the lookup list. My

wrong Sebastian. I can reproduce exactly what you state using
Project 2007 SP-2 Creating a custom field with a lookup table
and
then copying to Global does not copy the lookup fields.

It's an error that's been around since at least June 2008.

A work around is to import the lookup table.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Rob. Thanks for your ideas.

I'm pretty sure I'm copying the field to right global file
(global.MPT). In
fact, I did the following test:
a. Created two custom text fields (1 using a lookup table and 1
using a
formula) and then I added them to the global.
b. Created two custom number fields (1 using a lookup table and
1
using a
formula) and then I added them to the global.
c. Closed the project where I created the fields and opened a
new
one.
d. Inserted the four custom fields.

After doing this I realized than ONLY the custom fields which
involved a
lookup table didn't work well, no values appeared on the list.
On
the other
hand, the formula fields had no problem at all.

That's why I suspect that this problem has something to do with
lookup
tables, but I don't know what should I do.

Finally, with "Computer" account I'm refering to the PROFILE
you
select when
you open Project Professional. In other words, I'm not
connecting
to a
project server account.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

:

Ideas:

1. Are you sure which global.mpt you are writing to? Write
something
else, other than this field, and confirm the timestamp on the
file changes.
2. I'm confused by your nomenclature "Computer" account. Why
don't you
use your own login id on that machine? Again, see No. 1
above.
My
default the global.mpt is in your own windows "profile" buried
down in
the hierarchy of files.
3. Does it work to save other things into global.mpt, e.g. a
filter,
table, and view?
4. Perhaps start again? Copy out of the current global.mpt
anything
that's useful into a regular file, then rename it (same as
deleting it
from Project's perspective). The restart project and it should
re-create
the global.mpt.

This happens to me with or without SP2. I've tried this on
three different
machines (one of them with SP2).

What else should I check before copying the field to the
global? As I said
before, I did exactly the same on Project 2003 and had no
problem.

Thank you!

Do you have SP1 at least? Try upgrading to SP2 for Project
2007.

Hi Rod.

Yes, I did that. I copy the field from the project where I
created it to
the
global using the Organizer. Nonetheless, when I insert
that
field in a new
Project, no values appear on the list. If I search the
properties of the
field (in the new project) I find that the lookup table is
empty, but it's
funny because the graphical indicators do appear.

Do I have to copy the lookup table to the global as well?
How
do I do
that?

By the way, this field is at task level. Thanks.

Hi,

Have you tried using the Organizer to copy the Field?
Click
on the Field
tab
of the Organizer to do this.

[Project Professional 2007]

Hi everyone.

I've created a custom text field which uses a lookup
table
and shows
graphic
indicators. I did this via Project Professional and
working
with the
"Computer" Account (I mean, in the local machine). This
field works
fine
only
for the specific project where I created it, because
when I
add it to
the
Global and try to use it in a new project, the values of
the lookup
table
are
not available on the list.

I've tried with several fields: Text1, Text2, Text3 and
always happens
the
same.
I already had created this field with Project 2003 and
everything
worked
then.

What else do I have to do in Project 2007?

Hello Sebastian,

For some reason, the Global.mpt file won't hold the lookup list.
My
suggestion is to create a new project file and copy the lookup
field
from your original to the new file. Add other tasks or calendars
as
needed. Then save that file as a template and use that template
to
create new projects. I hope this helps.

Hi Julie.

Glad to know I'm not doing anything wrong. But I have one more
question:
does this mean that I have to import the lookup table for EVERY
project where
I want to use the custom field? Because I don't find any tab in
the organizer
to copy the lookup table to the global.

Thanks!!
