cannot open .doc on new computer

G'day all,
I am using Microsoft Office 2000 Professional and have just transferred all
my word, excel etc to a new 'puter. Only trouble is, I can't get any of them
to open. They work just fine on the old computer but are useless on the new.
I have updated from the Microsoft site and also downloaded different
converters to no avail. I've been at it for hours with no joy whatever.
Does anyone have an answer for the problem. Would much appreciate any help.

Does the new PC have Office installed? or did you just transfer the files
