MSP 2002 has been working just fine ... suddenly i cannot open any .mpd files
but i can open .mpp files. I have made no setting changes that i am aware of.

Can you save to a new .mpd then open from it? If so you may have a corrupted
file. Try opening a COPY of the .mpd in Access and repairing it (In Access
you need to filter for all files in the File Open dialog (*.*)).

If that doesn't help your drivers may have been affected by installation of
another program or a service pack. Try repairing Project.

Rod,

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, I cannot open ANY .mpd files even ones created as much as a
year ago.

I also notice that everytime I attempt to open an .mpd file a MS Access .ldb
( Locked Data Base ) File is created with the icon showing the
Lock locked. I have no idea how to stop this or how to unlock the database
or why it is locked.

Help !

Hi,

The .ldb file is created by the Jet engine and prevents another user editing
the project file you open. I suspect either Project has corrupted or an MDAC
update didn't complete. Looks like you need to try a repair of Project.

Can you open the files in Access?

Hi Rod,

I uninstalled MSP 2002 and then re - installed. No change. Then I
installed MSP 2003 ... same problem. All this is on my laptop.

I also own a desktop ... about a month ago i had backed up all my laptop to
the HD of the desktop. So I opened MSP 2002 on my desktop tried to open .mpd
files on my desktop only ... same problem !

So then i started thinking what in the world have i done to damage two
machines. Since i really don't use the desktop for much of anything the only
answer is that i installed Norton Anti - Virus 2006 brand new copy. I
uninstalled Norton AV 2006. Problem is still there.

So that leaves only one other thing i can think of ... an MS Update of some
kind to Office or Windows XP that is causing the problem. I have installed
absolutely nothing else to the desktop than Norton AV 2006 and MS Updates to
my Laptop and my Desktop.

Clarity please on your last E Mail : What is MDAC ? As i understand my
problem however its every .mpd that will not open. Am i missing your point
about repairing Project ? I did do a repair on Project originally - no luck.
Then as i said above i uninstalled it ... reinstalled it ... then I
uninstalled it and installed MSP 2003 in its place.

This is really getting me down now. I have run out of options. Any other
suggestions ?

Thanks, Rodger

Hi,

You could try re-installing after removing Norton, but I suspect MDAC more.

MDAC is Microsoft's Data Access Components. It gets installed with Office
and updated with Office Service Packs etc. Latest version is 2.8 I think.
Maybe it got corrupted by updates to one or more programs.

Can you copy your .mpd to another PC and open it there in Project or Access?

I think you need to talk to your IT people or you can try downloading MDAC
2.8 from:

Hi Rod,

Thanks for taking the time to think this over and reply to me - it is
appreciated. I am a one person company so i am the IT department - so not
much help there ;-)

I will try what you say regarding downloading the MDAC. However, I asked a
friend of mine who also uses MSP 2003 to trying opening an .mpd file on his
laptop - no go. So then i asked him to create a new project - then save it
as an .mpd and then to try to open it - no go once again.

So it seems to me that your deduction about it being an MDAC issue has a
fair chance of being correct. Also it could be a registry issue but since i
have totally uninstalled MSP and then re - installed it again and it did not
change i have no idea how to deal with this.

Since it now appears across separate computers with different users i really
am starting to wonder how it is that Microsoft is not getting complaints
about this and if so why they haven't dealt with it.

I will let you know if the MDAC reinstall fixes the problem or not.

Thanks once again, Rodger
