cannot open office 2007

db ´¯`·.. >

ok, then lets try another
technique to make your
normal mode starts clean
as if you were starting
windows in safe mode.

while in normal mode
click on start>run>msconfig

(manually type and launch the
command msconfig above)

now go to the start up
tab and disable anything
that is enabled.

you might want to jot
down what you disabled.

next go to the services
tab and "hide" all microsoft
services.

then what is left, disable.

again you might want
to jot down what you
disabled, then reboot
and retry your office
in normal mode.

I have Norton Internet Security.

No I do not have the 2007 compatibility pack.

I really can't think of anything that I have done just prior to it not
working.

In Norton Options disable the "Office Plug-in" option. This is known to
cause conflicts with Office documents. You'll still be protected by the
AutoProtect Layer. The only thing the Office Plut-in does that the
AutoProtect layer doesn't is scan password protected documents prior to
opening.

why in the world would
norton put in place something
to inhibit office?

I mean you suggestion is
an excellent one but my
criticism is against norton.

honestly, I think norton
does such things deliberately,
perhaps retribution against
microsoft.

I had that norton internet
security a couple of years
ago, but gladly through it
into the trash can several
months later.

In Norton I found "turn off scanning for Microsoft Office Documents" is this
the one you were referring to?

Wouldn't just turning off Norton achieve the same thing?

Could there still be something in the registry that is screwing something
up? If so, is there a registry cleaner for Microsoft Office? Or a list of
keys left behind after uninstall that need to be removed?

I did some reading on the net and found there were forums removing add-in's
cleared some issues, is there anything to this?

well, I think the question
are awaiting to resolve is
if your office became functional
with either method provided?

no point in further exploring
the issue, until you can provide
a status.

in answer to your question,
turning off norton and simply
turning off a setting is not
exactly the same thing.

but with any luck, one of
the methods will prove favorable.

you should try the setting
method first, as it is relatively
easy.

if no luck then try my suggestion.

I went into msconfig and did all that you suggested, still got the error
messages in all office programs as I did before. Then I went and reset them
all back to normal.

ok, well we are running
out of options.

1) we know your office
works in safe mode
but not in normal mode.

2) we know you have a
fixed sized of virtual
memory, so this is no
longer an issue for
windows but did not
resolve the issue for
office.

3) we know you can't
safe start office with
either the /a switch or
the ctrl key method.

4) we also know that you
have deleted the normal.dotx
template.

5) we also know you
disabled your startups
and non microsoft services
and rebooted, but still couldn’t
launch office.

6) my suggestion is to keep
your startups and non microsoft
services disabled.

keep in mind that we are
utilizing the process of elimination
and resetting or reversing any
settings we have suggested
will only not be helpful.

after you reboot with no
startups, then I would try
a registry scan:

7) http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm

let us know if any of the
above numbered line items
is not accurate or if you
have additional fyi of them.

Yes, you want to turn off scanning for Microsoft Office Documents (they've
apparently renamed this option in more recent versions). Note this isn't the
same thing as disabling your virus scanner. The file that is used to scan
Office documents stays resident even if virus scanning is turned off and has
been known to stay resident even if Norton is uninstalled. It will, however,
not be enabled if you start Windows in Safe Mode.

You noted you tried the suggestions "db" offered but did you try turning of
the scanning of Microsoft Office Documents?

Yes I did uncheck the box for scanning ms documents, still couldn't open any
office products.

Yes I did try what db offered and I still have the scan off in Norton, still
no luck.

well, I'll give it one
last shot before having
you use the free 90 day
technical support for
office.

below are the instructions
I received from them pertaining
to the work file.

might work for you too:

1. Click Start > click Run > type regedit and then press Ok.

2. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

3. In the right pane, double-click Cache

4. In Value Data field, type C:\Windows\temp and then click OK.

5. Exit Registry Editor.

6. Restart the Computer.

Nope didn't work. As far as the 90 day, that won't work either, I have had it
much longer than that and of course it had been working just fine. I
appreciate your help.

Beth, any suggestions? What about some of the other questions I had asked
earlier?

Thanks
Dave

When you couldn't start the Office applications in the application Safe Mode
(holding Ctrl while starting) ruled out add-ins and any issues with the
Office installation since the application Safe Mode will start the
application using the factory defaults. So scrubbing Office data from the
registry and disabling add-ins will likely prove fruitless.

Now, the fact that you can run the Office applications when you start
Windows in Safe Mode indicates the issue is caused by a device driver such
as your graphics driver, printer driver, etc. Did you update all of your
drivers to rule them out?

unlike the other products,
the 90 day support does
not start at the time of
purchase or registration.

instead the 90 day clock
begins ticking at the time
you place/ create your
first service ticket.
