Cannot open test files with Word 2000

Hello:

I have reinstalled Word 2000 (after uninstalling it and installing 2010
Beta, now uninstalled).

I now discover that Word 2000 cannot open text files, whether I have text
files with a .doc extension or a .txt extension. This was never a problem in
the past. I have Notepad set to open .txt files, with Word as secondary.

What can I do?

Oh, not entirely sure this happened right after reinstall of 2000.

Thanks,

Hans L

What do you mean by "cannot open"? What happens when you try? Is there an
error message of some kind?

Herb, thank you for asking, in spite of my lousy message. ("test" in the
heading should, of course be "text", and I forgot to relay the error message.
I must have been tired.)

When I try to open a text message, I get the following error message:

"Microsoft Word for Windows has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available.
[button] Close program"

And this leaves, for instance, ~$L112334.doc" in the folder.

Hope that this information is enough as a clue. Again, thank you!

Does this happen with all text files, or just one? If with just one, I'd
guess that the file is corrupted--try opening it with Notepad and see if it
works there.

If it happens with all text files, that kind of behaviour usually is the
result of a corrupted registry entry (usually the Data key), a corrupted
normal.dot, or a misbehaving add-in.

For starters, start Word using the /a switch: winword.exe /a. If the
problem does not occur, then proceed with renaming normal.dot and deleting
the Data key. Word will create new versions of both.

The following article provides information on how to remove the Data key:

Herb, sorry for responding late. I do not get e-mail notification in spite of
having a working e-mail address in what I think is the right place.

What you suggested did notwork, so I reinstalled Office 2000 and converters.
Then, I discovered that my C partition had basically not space left, so I
fixed that.

Now, I can open .txt files with Word 2000. However, when I open text files
with a .doc extension by clicking on them, an interesting thing happens. I
get an error message saying

"Word cannot start the converter WWORD5.CNV.

I click OK in the error window, the message comes back, and I do this twice
again, and then, the file opens.

I cannot find much on hte ent about this error message, at least nothing
that has been of much help. Do you have any idea what might be going on?

Regards,

After several uninstall (the last with Windows Installer Cleanup Utility) and
reinstalls, it now works. I do not know for sure what was wrong.

Thanks for your attempt to help, Herb.
