Cannot reinstall Office 2K Error1402

Would someone please help me for the following problem :

I am using Office 2K under WindowMe. One day, suddenly all my office program icons prompt me for reinstallation. However when I insert the CD for installation and in the middle of installation, it will give me the message "Error 1402 Cannot open key HKEY_LOCAL_Machines\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress. Verified that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel"

I checked that this is no subkey Installer in the registery. I tired to create one but the sytem do not allow me change it name to installer. Have also checked KB article 324516 and 236592 but they did not help.

Only office related programs have this problem. Others such as PKZIP, WordPad are normal.

The last abnormal thing I can see is I cannot see any installed programs in the Control Panel. There should be list of all programs I have installed under window.

My target is to resume Office function without the need to reinstall Window.

Thanks in advance.
