Cannot run Equation Editor

C

Chris Kam

Error Message:

Microsoft Office Word can't start the application required to open this
object.
An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would
you like to repair this feature now?

Have tried to repair, bu still cannot run it.

Do anyone know how to solve it?

I have already check this, but I am not using Norton's software.
I really have no idea why the error occurs.

Hmmm... sorry, I don't see in your original post where you
mention that you already checked this. At the risk of suggesting
something else that you already checked, start Windows Explorer
and search for an OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard drive (be sure to
include system and hidden files/folders in the search options).
If you find it, then you are using Norton's software. Note the
folder where the file is located, and use the "regsvr32 /u"
method described in KB329820 to unregister the DLL.

Sorry that I didn't mention.

I have already done the searching on that file, but 0 files found. I am
using McAfee Virus Screen. Do you know what happened?

I'd say what happened is that you did not search with the proper
search options selected. The error message you quoted is a
classic symptom of the Norton Antivirus Office Plugin. As far as
I know, McAfee does not cause the quoted error message to appear.
But you're apparently way ahead of me, so I'd just be wasting
my time trying to suggest something that you haven't already
done. Good luck.

No, what I have said is I have already done all the searching for that file
with what you have suggested, including search those hidden/system files, but
still cannot find that file. I know it is a classic symptom of Norton
Antivirus Office Plug-in, but what I want to point out is I don't have any
Norton's software installed in my computer.

So it means I cannot follow your instructions to deal with the problem, but
just can ask for anyone who know what's happened.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Chris,

You didn't mention the version of Office you're using
but you may want to check the Microsoft Office listing
in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel
to be sure that it lists the Equation Editor as set
to 'run from my PC'.

Oh sorry again, I should include the details here next time.
It is Office 2003 Professional (English)
I have already installed all the functions on Local and run on my pc.
I still don't know what's wrong with it.

I have a client with this problem and I found an unusual workaround.

Here is the story:
Office 2003 Standard Edition - everything installed to run from PC. Have
tried all of the Norton tips, including uninstalling it completely, checking
registry, etc. Nothing helped.

In PPT, insert an Excel object. When try to edit the embedded object, get
"Microsoft Office PowerPoint can't start the application required to open
this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning
properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?"

Repair can't complete -get another set of errors.

My workaround that seems to work consistently:

1) Insert the object into PPT.
2) Save the PPT file and close it.
3) Open it up again and you can now edit the object.

Any ideas on why?
Thanks.
Sandy

I'm curious -- the subject line mentions Equation Editor, but your problem
didn't say anything about Equation Editor. Was there a connection that I
missed?

Bob,
Yes, the connection was the error message and scenario. I had seen postings
regarding Equation Editor and editing embedded objects with similar
resolutions and troubleshooting techniques. I concluded, perhaps
erroneously, that the Equation Editor and editing of OLE objects used the
same components in Office.

I had thought about posting a new thread but had gotten into the editing of
my message and thought that, at least, this seemed connected.

Seems logical to me. Thanks for the explanation.
