Cannot send/receive msgs

A strange thing has happened ... after months of no problems I am suddenly
unable to send messages or read incoming messages using Outlook! I am using
an imap server and I can see the headers for the messages in the Inbox but
when I click on one to see the message itself the system goes into the deep
freeze for about two minutes and then comes up with "A timeout occured whole
comminicating with <the name of my mail account>. The connection has been
closed". I do not know what is causing this ... no new software of note has
been installed ... antivirus reports no problems ... have rebooted ...
powered on/off the cable modem and router.

After creating a message and hitting Send it sits in the Outbox and does not
go out. I have called my cable provider and ISP but have not gotten any
help. All of the account settings appear normal. I don't have clue where to
start looking.

One additional note of interest ... in playing around with this for the past
several hours I WAS able to download and see a couple of messages in my Inbox
but now everything's frozen again. Strange.

Thanks for any advice/help.

.... antivirus reports no problems ...

What flavor of A/V software are you using? When you check the item in
your Outbox waiting to be sent, is it in an italicized state, or normal
font format?

I am using Symantec Antivirus (ver 10. somehting). As a test I turned off
internet email auto protect (I normally have that on). No help.

Message in outbox is in italicized state.

italicized state is what you want to see. I've seen problems where an
a/v tool will do a scan on an outgoing email, before Outlook gets
around to sending, and once the scan has occurred the email in the
outbox will change to a normal font. Outlook needs to see it italicized
when it goes to send. If normal font, won't send.

Wanted to verify if you were using NIS. I've also seen problems with
the suite and Outlook performance.

Given, none of these are what you're using...best to leave it to the
MVP's on forum to assist, as not sure where to tell you to go next -
Hope you get it resolved -
