Can't add or sum

I just copied and pasted some information from my online
banking. There are two columns of interest for me, the are
deposits and withdrawels.

The numbers are there but when I try to add them columns
by using sum or even a formula (using + between cell
addresses) all I get are zeros.

I tried to reset the cells as numbers and then I get an
error (#value).

If there are numbers there why can't I add them?
Are they considered text and if so how do I convert the so
I can add them?

Hi
these values are probably stored as 'Text'. Try the following:
- format the cells as 'Number'
- copy an empty cell
- select your numbers
- goto 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose 'Add'
