Can't enter hours in Resource Usage

B

Blue Stallion

MS Project 2003 Pro. I have a set of resources that I can not add hours to
for specific days. I can add hours for one day, then the next day for that
resource will not accept hours, then the next two days will accept hours,
then another day that will not, and so on. The project calendar is standard,
and the resource calendar is set to a calendar I have created. My new
calendar has hours available for each day of the week. What should I be
checking to find out why I can't add hours for each day?

Thanks

Hello Blue Stallion,

When you attempt to add hours, does Project change them to zero? Is
your resource leveling set to Automatic? Are you connected to a
Project Server?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

No it does not change to 0. It just will not put the number in the cell when
I press the key. It just ignores the keystroke. I am not connected to a
Project Server, its a standalone.

Thanks for the additional information. The only way I can reproduce
what you report is to have nonworking time on the resource's calendar.
I would double check the dates you are trying to add work against the
resource's calendar and make sure they are working days. (Double
click on the resource's name in the Resource Usage view and check the
working time).

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for the help so far, but I'm still where I was. Maybe some more
information. What I'm trying to do is schedule a guard shift. I will have
three guard shifts on four different sites. The calendar for the guards is
called Guard Shift, and this calendar is applied to the 12 guards. The
project calendar is the standard calendar. The Guard Shift calendar is
Sunday 24 hours, Monday through Friday 12:00 AM to 2:00 AM and 2:00 PM to
12:00 AM, and Saturday is 24 hours.

The dates for the guard duty are 22 May 2009 to 12 Jun 09. Guard starts at
2:00 PM on the 22 of May 09. (This is part of a larger project that starts
before 22 May 09, and I have been able to schedule other people on other
tasks as desired.) Let's consider the guards for the first site. On 22 May
I am able to schedule the first guard for 8 hours, and the second guard for 2
hours. For 23 May I am able to shedule the thrid guard for 8 hours, the
first guard for 8 hours, and the second guard for 6 hours in the AM and 2
hours in the PM for a total of 8. Now for Sunday the 24th of May 09 I can
not enter any hours. All keystrokes in the Sunday fields are ignored. I can
enter hours for Monday, but Tuesday cells all ignore keystorkes. Wednesday
and Thursday accept hours, but Friday does not. Then Sat and Sun accept, but
Monday does not, and so on. So it seems that it is not a day of the week
thing, as each week is different as to which days will accept entries. I
have tried to enter the hours under both the Resource Usage page and the Task
Usage page and both seem to do the same thing on the same days.

Sorry so long, but I hope it will help you to help me.

Hello Blue,

Well, certainly the details do help but chances are without actually
looking at your project file, it is close to impossible for me to
figure out what is going on.

I've tried to re-create based upon your information but I am not
having any difficulties at all scheduling resources on any of the
days.

To try to speed this process along, if you would care to, zip the file
and email it to me. There are too many variables and too many
questions I need answered before I can even try to begin to see what
is going on. Send the file to passport 6847 at maine dot rr dot com.
Remove the spaces the replace the at with @ and dot with .

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello Blue,

I've been working on this some more. My comments are in-line.

information. What I'm trying to do is schedule a guard shift. I

[Julie] Okay, to try to boil this down:

You need to provide guard services for the following schedule:
12 hours per day Monday through Friday between the hours of 12:00 am
to 2:00 am and 2:00 pm to 12:00 am. From 2:00 am to 2:00 pm, no
guards are required.

24 hours per day on Saturday and Sunday running from 12:00 am to 12:00
am.
The calendar for the guards is
called Guard Shift, and this calendar is applied to the 12 guards.
The
project calendar is the standard calendar. The Guard Shift calendar
is
Sunday 24 hours, Monday through Friday 12:00 AM to 2:00 AM and 2:00
PM to
12:00 AM, and Saturday is 24 hours.

[Julie] I suggest re-thinking this approach. I assume you do not have
the same resource working all these hours. You most likely have 3
eight hour shifts for Saturday and Sunday (1st, 2nd, third). What is
your shift schedule for Monday through Friday for the 12 hours per
day?
The dates for the guard duty are 22 May 2009 to 12 Jun 09. Guard
starts at
2:00 PM on the 22 of May 09. (This is part of a larger project that
starts
before 22 May 09, and I have been able to schedule other people on
other
tasks as desired.)

[Julie] Okay, I assume you need to provide services with the above
schedule 12 hours per day Monday through Friday and 24 hours per day
on Saturday and Sunday.
Let's consider the guards for the first site. On 22 May
I am able to schedule the first guard for 8 hours

[Julie] - Okay Guard 1 Sunday 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm
, and the second guard for 2 hours.

[Julie] Okay Guard 2 for 10:00 pm to 12:00 am for only two hours.
For 23 May I am able to shedule the thrid guard for 8 hours, the
first guard for 8 hours, and the second guard for 6 hours in the AM
and 2
hours in the PM for a total of 8.

[Julie] But May 23rd is a Monday and we only have working time set for
guards for 12 hours per day. How are you scheduling 24 hours of work?
Are guard 3 and guard 1 working together?
Now for Sunday the 24th of May 09 I can
not enter any hours.

[Julie] May 24, 2009 is a Tuesday, not Sunday. You should be able to
schedule 12 hours of work for that day.
All keystrokes in the Sunday fields are ignored. I can
enter hours for Monday, but Tuesday cells all ignore keystorkes.
Wednesday
and Thursday accept hours, but Friday does not. Then Sat and Sun
accept, but
Monday does not, and so on. So it seems that it is not a day of the
week
thing, as each week is different as to which days will accept
entries. I
have tried to enter the hours under both the Resource Usage page and
the Task
Usage page and both seem to do the same thing on the same days.

[Julie] As I noted, there is clearly some thing going on -- the days
and dates you are giving do not match. You are welcome to send the
file along if you'd like. Without it, I cannot being to guess what is
going on with the information I have so far.
Sorry so long, but I hope it will help you to help me.

[Julie] Please don't worry about the length of the posts :)
