Can't Open Project Plan from SharePoint

B

BillV

I recently uploaded a Project File to SharePoint and now, most of the office
can't open the plan. What can cause this problem. I made sure the stations
in question had SP1 for Project 2007 installed and the service packs for 2003
were installed. Is there a workaround or other solution. I did nothing
unusual in saving or uploading the file. Should I disable the macros?

Hi Bill,

Try posting on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project

Hi Glen,

Maybe I should have posted like this: I uploaded a Project Plan to
SharePoint without any problems.

There are folks in the office who try and open the project but both Project
2007 and 2003 start then crash, stating there is a problem with Project. Can
you give me any clue why that happens? It's annoying for everyone. I
checked and everyone has the latest Service Packs. I uploaded to Sharepoint
using Project 2007 Pro, not connected to Project Server.

Hi Bill,

That's as maybe, but those who are experts in the use of servers hang out in
the server newsgroup, though there maybe someone in this newsgroup who knows
how servers work. If your project was crashing on your machine as a
standalone device, then you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43.
Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hello Bill,

First of all question for you, please could you specify which version
of ms project (2003 or 2007) that you uploaded to SharePoint? Also,
the folks are trying to open the project plan, which version of MS
Project installed on their machines.

f the user have MS Project 2003 installed on their machine and trying
to open the 2007 version MPP file, probably user can install the
convertor to address this issue. You can download the convertor
(Project 2003 Service Pack 3) from here:

URL to download convertor to resolve the crash issue:

Thanks Chak,

I'll tell all the office members running Project 2003 to install SP3 for
their version.

I uploaded the Project Plan with 2007 Professional without a problem. I did
not have any problems opening it prior to uploading nor do I now. I can log

Hi Bill,

Here is the few tips that you can start troublueshooting the issue:

1)You mentioned in your original posting, you uploaded the server
version of MPP file to SharePoint. If so, I doubt your project plan
name might be like xyz.published.mpp. If so, renamed the file to
xyz.mpp

2) You also mentined in your original posting, when user attempt to
open MPP file from SharePoint, both Project pro 2003 and Project pro
2007 start getting open. It means, users have both the versions of MS
Project installed on their machines?

If both versions of MS Proj Pro installed on user machine, make sure
they respective Service packs (SP3 for MS Project Pro 2003 and SP1 for
MS Project Pro 2007) installed.

I had a similar issue in my organization, we able to resolve the issue
by installing both service packs.

Just start with one user machine by installing required service packs
and restrat the machine. I hope the issue will go away here.

Thanks
Chak
