Project 2010 "Project has stopped working" error when attempting to import from Excel

While attempting to create a new project from an excel file I am getting the famous and so helpful "Project has stopped working" error popup and windows closes the program. I only get through the below steps.

-Open Project
-Select File-Open
-Change file type to excel
-Select my file, select open.

No other dialogue or display before the error popup and the window closes.

I have enabled all legacy file types in the options menu.
