Can't Paste - Can't Save Picture As

J

I want to insert some pages from a book in a PowerPoint presentation.

Because the contain graphics, tables, charts, and images, 'regular paste'
does not work.

Usually, I 'paste special' and paste grouped objects as an enhanced metafile
and it works like a charm.

However, my clipboard is giving me trouble this morning and I keep getting
'busy' messages which is a problem in itself...

Anyway, I'm trying to use the handy 'save as picture' feature in Pub2003.
I am trying to save a group of objects as a picture in Publisher 2003.

I can save them as a JPEG, but not as Enhanced Metafile.

Any suggestions for getting the 'busy' message to disappear or get these
images saved as enhanced metafiles?

UPDATE: Seems that it only happens with metafiles. If I try to the paste or
save the objects as JPEG, no problem.

When I try to paste special in Pub as enhanced metafile, I get a 'busy'
message.
When I try to save in Pub as enhanced metafile, I get can not save file.
When I try to paste special in PP as enhanced metafile, nothing happens.

BTW_ Running XP SP2 Office 2003 with latest patches.

UPDATE: Repaired Office. Made sure graphic filters are installed. I have a
dual boot running W2K and Office. It's for emergencies like this one. Opened
the document in the W2K boot - pasting and saving emfs are no problem. From
that 'clean copy' of Office, I copied the graphic filters and replaced the
ones on the XP system. No go. I also booted in safe mode and - TA-DA! I can
save and paste enhanced metafiles in the XP boot that way. I also turned off
virus soft, Trend, BTW.

At this point, I'm gonna guess that something is running in the background
that prevents the computer from completing the operation.

I have tons of stuff to do, so I'm going back to W2K for now to get some
work done, this problem has eaten half my day.

I'm open to suggestions, or a solution if someone know...

TIA

META-FILE-MADNESS!!

I did some work in safe mode, saved about 50 files, got to the last one. No
go. Rebooted in safe mode and tried to copy and repaste as an .emf. When it
pasted in, it pasted almost the size of the entire scratch area with a
perfect image in the bottom right hand corner. I cropped the image down to
the correct size. It's useable but.... this is driving me crazy!

Have you considered your video card is needing a new driver?
Try this, slide down the adapter acceleration, control panel, display, settings tab,
advanced button, troubleshoot tab. If
this solves your problem, go to the manufacturer's web site and look around for an
upgraded video driver.

Yes, but a few things:

Booting into W2K on the same machine with the same driver, I could work with
..emf files.

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro from a third part manufacturer that will not accept
any ATI driver past 6.14.10.6467.

Catalyst is a no go! I got the card here in Japan, I'm considering replacing
it with a 9800 from the states.

Everything else works fine, though.

On a brand new Dell 9600 (Japanese version) with a Radeon mobile X300 64MB,
I had the same strange behavior as with the desktop; when it pasted in, it
pasted almost the size of the entire scratch area with a perfect image in
the bottom right hand corner.

I'll try fiddling with the acceleration and see what happens.
