can't save but can save as

I have a user with a ppt file that is giving them trouble. They open the
file, make changes and try to save it but it gives them an error. They CAN
save as another file though. If they go back to the new file, change it and
try to save it the same error occurs and they have to do the save as trick
again.
Any ideas on why this is happening and what I should be looking for?

More information please, Version of PowerPoint and OS. What exactly is the
error?

The error is that it can't save the file. It offers explanations such as bad
sectors and so on, but that's about it. The error message is too generic to
be useful.
If we move the file to another machine it works fine. We rebuilt the users
profile, repaired/reinstalled office - still no luck.
